PRESENTATION

Derby is the result of a project envolving Imprensa Canalha and Mike Goes West print studio. It's a entirely silkscreened book of a unique nature, since all the images were created directly in the silkscreen matrix, using a brush. It is a big challenge for the illustrator because this method {DIRECT METHOD} compels to a quick and spontaneous gesture and doesn't allow big corrections. 10 artists were invited to participate in this project: five from Lisbon (André Lemos, João Maio Pinto, Filipe Abranches, Jucifer and Luís Henriques) and five from Oporto: Marco Mendes, Miguel Carneiro, Nuno de Sousa, Carlos Pinheiro, and Zé Cardoso. The introductory text is by Pedro Vieira de Moura. The cover and text design is by José Feitor.

PRESENTATION
Raças Humanas (Humana Races) presents a series of illustrations for a Ernest Granger text, published in 1924, an essay about human diversity that mingled scientific facts and stereotypes common in those colonial times. The book starts with a 2 page comic inspired in a story told in a Jared Diamond's book, Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies (1997) about the fatal encounter between maoris and morioris, in the Chatham islands, in the XIXth century, that works as a lucid metaphor about what really explains the reason for such human diversity: the constant struggle for the dominio of natural resources.
This volume constitutes the last part of a trilogy initiated with O Mundo dos Insectos (the world of insects) e continued with Animais! (Animals!), a graphic essay around human nature, in its interaction with the rest of the animal world.

PRESENTATION

The book Iron Head is an essentially visual anthology about one of the most striking moments of the short Human history and the one that noisily announces our entrance in the Contemporary World: the Industrial Revolution. Various illustrators were invited to express, in black and white, their relation with the wonderful and terrible world of machines. The introductory text is by the archaeologist Luís Luís. Set of illustrators: André Lemos, Dr. Orango, Bruno Borges, Pedro Burgos, Richard Câmara, Filipe Abranches, Jucifer, Luís Henriques, Zé Cardoso, Rui Vitorino Santos, Pedro Lourenço, João Maio Pinto, José Feitor, Joana Rosa Bragança, Rosa Baptista and Júlio Dolbeth.The edition is accompanied by the Industrial Sound Wreck, a sound collage by Filipe Leote.

PRESENTATION
The book A table is boards is composed of 11 stories created from old stamps with images of fruits - cherries, strawberries, apple and figs, among others. All histories turn on relations - love, friendship, complicity or altruism - establishing a link with the fruit (example: fig/maturity). The set is formed by an image and its respective story. The narratives are small, following the dimension of the book (10X10 cm) and function as small synopses, that can give origin to more complex stories, created by the readers.

PRESENTATION
Artur Varela {Almodôvar, 1937} learned sculpture in Lisbon, passed through Paris {Atelier Adam}, parked later in Holland during two decades and returned to Lisbon in the end of the 80’s. Meanwhile he had explored not only sculpture in wood and metal, but also painting, drawing, comics and video. After the experiences with super 8 format at the beginning of the 70’s {PORTUGAL 1973} Varela returns to the video media, armed with a top digital machine but using archaic methods and concepts of cinema. Animating drawings, images and static forms and making use of the comic art sequential codes, Arthur Van der Hella creates hilarious narratives about crucial subjects of contemporary history (the Lady of Fátima, Berlusconi, Salazar and Opel Meriva Fun).

Artur Varela {Almodôvar, 1937} learned sculpture in Lisbon, passed through Paris {Atelier Adam}, parked later in Holland during two decades and returned to Lisbon in the end of the 80’s. Meanwhile he had explored not only sculpture in wood and metal, but also painting, drawing, comics and video. The films integrated in Portugal 1973 fit in the exploration of super 8 format by a somewhat distant and cynical observer of the indigenous customs. Parts of these films have been projected for the first time in 1973, at Varela’s exhibition in the National Society of Fine Arts of Lisbon. Many years later, in 2000, the films would be shown in the scope of the Slow Motion project, in the Caldas da Rainha, directed by Miguel Wandschneider.

PRESENTATION

Animals! presents a set of images and texts without apparent connection. The texts were taken out of easy-science books for families, popular in the 70’s, and approach subjects related with adolescence, food or old age among humans. The images show anthropomorphised animals and animalized human beings in constant interaction. In this apparent chaos, a message appears: The instinct is gone but appetite remains. Man tries to move away from the rest of the animal kingdom and in this anxiety he forgets the essential: its nature. Yes, we also make part of Linnaeus’ Systema Naturae.

Opening the volume, a fragment of Darwin’s 1872 book, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. In Animals!, José Feitor deepens the concept of graphical appropriation, using in a random way appropriated images and texts in a unique combination. Chance and concept mix in this graphic project.

Babinski reveals the path from disgrace to redemption in the image of a pathetic and pragmatic psychopath. For Babinski, repentance will do him no good, because the society that first condemned him will afterwards use his image to nourish its inexhaustible hunger of idols.

Information on the authors:

José Feitor (1972, Coimbra) Professor, illustrator and publisher. Responsible for the zine Zundap during the 90’s. Booster of a series of projects envolving graphical arts connected with the Feira Laica enterprise. Created the Imprensa Canalha label.
Luis Henriques (1973, Lisbon) Children’s book illustrator and comics author with several books published in Portugal. Also a teacher and investigator on contemporary art.

PRESENTATION

Fruit of one informal soirée that started with barbecue chicken and finished with sake, the drawings of Beautiful Corpse resulted of a spontaneous, free and compulsory process. The paper sheets were passed around and each artist filled the empty space, out of the premises left by others. Of this dazzling work 32 drawings emerged, very diverse. Among compositions as beautiful as troubling, humoured pastiches, embryos of narratives and bestiarys, the specter of the Beautiful Corpse is ample. Raw drawings indeed. The text that precedes the drawings, bred by Miguel Antunes, is itself of a frankensteinian nature. An external force drives the deranged thoughts that escape from the head of a man who walks no one knows where.

PRESENTATION

THE WORLD OF THE INSECTS results of a series of graphical experiences that the author has developed having as inspiration the animal world, in its diversity of morphology and behaviours. The temptation to attribute human features and attitudes to irrational animals is immemorial, in both History of Art and literature domains. In our days, whereas the scientists claim that Man keeps almost nothing of its primeval instinct, the ethologists unveil the lowermost detail about the behaviour of other animals and genetic research advances inexorably, this is a very interesting work field.In INSECT’S WORLD, the depredatory, voracious and aggressive nature of these animals does echoes aspects of life in the human societies. However, while insects cannot make choices nor know ethics (which explains its behaviour guided only for instinctive mechanisms related with survival and reproduction), the behaviour of Man is truly abysmal. The female of the Praying Mantis sometimes devours the male during intercourse because it needs nourishing so that the reproduction process runs smoothly whenever it’s not easy to obtain food.

The drawings for THE WORLD OF THE INSECTS series were made between March and May of 2006, from scientific and educative books. They were drawn directly (without previous sketch) in sheets of paper with Edding markers of various thicknesses. Other works of José Feitor related with animals can be seen in blog escroque.
